Permaphalt mastic asphalt has helped transform the roof of the Norton House Hotel in Edinburgh into a picturesque rooftop garden.

Now a focal point, ideal for wedding photography and other private functions, mastic asphalt has provided a robust and long lasting waterproofing system to help sustain the garden and protect the hotel for generations to come.

Installed with a 20 year guarantee, the Permaphalt system uses advanced polymer technology to give the ideal combination of long term durability, increased fatigue resistance, improved temperature stability and ease of installation.

Easily detailed around thresholds, the dark coloured mastic asphalt was the ideal contrast for the colourful top layer of extensive sedum blanket.

A drainage board was applied to provide a base for the extensive growing medium, and a pre-grown sedum blanket provided the top covering. To complete the project, a drainage edge retention trim was then installed to perimeter kerbs.

Now complete, the project at Norton House Hotel provides an unusual chequerboard effect using the sedum blankets and hard and soft landscaping. The sedum blankets change colour with seasonal variation which provides the hotel with a perfect backdrop for functions.
