The latest contractor member to join the Mastic Asphalt Council (MAC) is Apex Asphalt based in Sheffield. The company has been established for over 30 years and key members of the team include Managing Director Richard Foulkes, Operations Director Carl Coult and Contracts Director Nick Smith.

The company’s head office is based in Sheffield, but the firm covers contracts across the whole of the UK. The majority of the work that Apex Asphalt deals with is new build related, but the company also completes roofing refurbishment projects. As the company name implies, Apex Asphalt was originally established as a mastic asphalt installing company and the Directors felt it was important to become a member of the Mastic Asphalt Council.

Operations Director Carl Coult said: “We’re delighted to become a MAC member and as a long established company, we thought it was important to be recognised for the work we produce within our industry. Our company heritage is in the installation of mastic asphalt and we believe MAC membership will bring major benefits to our business, such as giving us access to key communication relating to future changes within the roofing industry, and future projects coming up.

“We are also able to liaise with MAC Director Malcolm Grinstead about technical back-up if there are any queries relating to mastic asphalt products and design. Mastic asphalt has great heritage and it’s a very versatile product that is being reintroduced to the modern way of building and construction. Its durability and strength as a waterproofing product are second to none.”

Apex Asphalt - Jubilee Tower DarwenApex Asphalt has successfully completed many prestigious mastic asphalt projects over the years, such as Scarborough Spa, a Grade II* listed building in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The Victorian building is situated on the site of the original spa house, which was erected in the early 1700’s following the discovery of natural mineral waters. Use of the natural water wells declined and finally ceased, but the Spa building itself has evolved into a well-known venue for conferences, exhibitions, entertainment, live music and events.

Owned and managed by Scarborough Borough Council, the Spa has a Grand Hall, which seats almost 2,000 people and hosts live entertainment including the Scarborough Spa Orchestra and the annual Scarborough Jazz Festival.

Apex Asphalt worked alongside Shield Membranes to complete the renovation and renewal of the promenade of Scarborough Spa. Over 2,000m2 of mastic asphalt waterproofing and red paving grade asphalt were restored to bring this historic building back to its best.

As the official trade association for the UK mastic asphalt industry, the Mastic Asphalt Council represents more than 90 companies – including mastic asphalt manufacturers, the contractors responsible for its installation, and associated suppliers of equipment and services. Top quality products, design and workmanship are fundamental to the Mastic Asphalt Council.

MAC membership is only open to those manufacturers and contractors that can satisfy the stringent quality requirements. These strict membership requirements enable MAC to justifiably claim that it represents the UK’s top 70 mastic asphalt contractors, as well as leading manufacturers. Only MAC members can use the MAC logo as a mark of quality and all mastic asphalt sold in the UK by MAC’s manufacturing members is produced in the UK and not imported.

MAC Director Malcolm Grinstead said: “As a non-profit making independent body, our primary objective is to promote the use of mastic asphalt and to regulate the quality and workmanship standards for its installation. We are delighted that Apex Asphalt is our latest contractor member and we very much look forward to working with them.”
